CAAP demands a fair, civil, and non-partisan hearing for highly-qualified nominee

Henderson, NV—July 10, 2018—Today, Rev. William Owens, President of the Coalition of African American Pastors (CAAP), called on the Senate to put aside partisanship and hold a fair, civil, and speedy hearing for Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee.

Citing the partisan furor that began prior to the president’s announcement of his pick, Rev. Owens made it clear that the American people are weary of the political circus and will not accept any attempts to smear a well-qualified jurist for the sake of partisan grandstanding.

“There is no question that Judge Kavanaugh is qualified to serve on the nation’s highest court,” stated Rev. Owens. “He has served in the White House and clerked for Justice Kennedy. And his time on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals have marked him as a thoughtful jurist whose philosophy values the text of the law over penumbras and emanations. We are confident that he will help protect religious freedom and the plain language of the Constitution.”

Rev. Owens continued: “As our political discourse has coarsened, so has the tone of the confirmation hearings for this hallowed American institution. And I tell you that Americans are tired of it. We do not wish to see a good man – one who has devoted his life to the law and public service – smeared, mocked, or insulted by those who are afraid of a Supreme Court that will not serve as an activist tool for progressive politics.”

He concluded, “That is why CAAP has launched a petition calling for a swift, fair, civil, and non-partisan confirmation hearing for Judge Kavanaugh. To do otherwise will alienate millions of Americans who already wonder whether those inside the Beltway have lost touch with their values and abandoned the dignity of the office.”
