CAAP launches new “One Nation Under God” pledge aimed at healing America

Fulshear, TX — Aug. 3, 2020 — Today, the Coalition of African American Pastors (CAAP) launched a new petition aimed at cancel culture and the “rhetoric of division” that has taken over American politics. Called the “One Nation Under God” pledge, the new initiative was spurred by the stridently political speech given by former president Barack Obama at the funeral of Rep. John Lewis.

“I was shocked that former president Obama would choose to turn a solemn moment like this into a political stump speech,” stated Rev. William Owens, president of CAAP. “Rep. Lewis was a veteran of the American civil rights movement. I marched with him in Nashville when I was a college student, and he impressed me with his humility and dedication. His memorial should have been a place to bring people together. Instead, Obama chose to use the opportunity to sow division and campaign for the coming election.”

Rev. Owens continued: “Obama’s speech at Rep. Lewis’ funeral was the sign we all needed. The politics of division are tearing America apart. We, the people, need to unite to show our leaders how it’s done.”

In response, CAAP has launched its “One Nation” pledge. The petition expresses a commitment to unifying and healing America. Those who sign it pledge that they will, “refuse to engage in divisive rhetoric or cancel culture,” and that they will, “withhold our support for any politicians or businesses that stoke division or pander to those divisive elements.”

“Americans are fed up with the hatred and anger that we see around us,” stated Rev. Owens. “Neighbors and families are being encouraged to judge, hate, and belittle each other. This is not what we stand for. This is not our national character.”

Rev. Owens concluded: “We need to get back on the right path. America has always been a country that can pull together and work to overcome any challenge. Those who seek to divide us are seeking to weaken us as well. But we cannot let them. Sign our pledge today and tell the world that we are still, ‘one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all'”
