Alabama state legislator John Rogers recently made an astounding claim while opposing a bill that would ban abortion except when the mother’s health is at risk.
Rep. Rogers claimed that unwanted children inevitably grow up to become death row murderers:
“Some kids are unwanted, so you kill them now or you kill them later,” said Rep. Rogers in defense of abortion. “You bring them in the world unwanted, unloved, you send them to the electric chair. So, you kill them now or you kill them later.”
Rep. Rogers’ statement is a betrayal of Christian principles and an insult to black Americans. African American children are aborted more frequently than any other race or ethnic group. Rep. Rogers is suggesting that this is a good thing – that more black children would somehow be a detriment to our society.
If this weren’t enough, Rep. Rogers also made reference to “deformed” and “retarded” children, implying that they too are better aborted – as though their lives are somehow worth less than other children.
These comments are beyond foolish and offensive. They betray a callousness and a lack of understanding of the abortion issue that demonstrate Rep. Rogers is unfit for office. He has betrayed the black community.
The Coalition of African American Pastors (CAAP) is a black-led organization dedicated to the propagation of Biblical values. As such, we are calling upon Rep. Rogers to step down from his seat in the legislature. Please join us by signing the petition below.
We, the undersigned, join with CAAP to demand that Alabama State Legislator John Rogers resign his seat and apologize for his offensive and ill-informed statements on abortion, crime, and the sanctity of human life.
