“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” – John 14:27
The images alone are enough to cause grief.
Though days have passed since the deadly Turkey-Syria earthquake, we continue to hear updates of the terrible devastation and loss of life it has caused. Tens of thousands have died. More than a million people have been left homeless, many living in tents and struggling to meet their basic needs in winter temperatures.
It is heartbreaking to see the news coming from the region hit by the earthquake. What’s more, it tends to lead one to contemplate the chaos and devastation we see everywhere, both at home and abroad.
In the U.S., another mass shooting reminds us of the fragility of human life and the frustration that follows acts of senseless and cruel violence.
In the wake of such tragedy, it is only natural to feel sadness and despair.
That’s when it is most important to turn to scripture for guidance and comfort.
John 14:27 tells us not to let our hearts be troubled or afraid, regardless of what cause we have to fear and grieve. Those words are our reminder that the sorrows of this world are a passing shadow beside the comfort and peace that come from the Lord.
Along with the sad news from Turkey and Syria come miracles. More than a week after the earthquake, survivors are still being found in the rubble. Amid great devastation, there is still hope and life.
That is why faith is so important. It is our faith that will guide us through these dark moments and sustain us in times of trouble.
Yes, there is sorrow, but faith and prayer will see us through. I ask you to join me in praying for the victims of the earthquake and for all who are suffering. Let God comfort and help them in this time of great need.
